Rep. Clyde Opposes USPS Reversal on Green Street Post Office Relocation
Gainesville,
November 29, 2023
Gainesville, GA — Today, Representative Andrew Clyde (GA-09) released the following statement after the U.S. Postal Service (USPS) decided to retain Gainesville’s Green Street Post Office, reversing its previous position to sell the property and relocate the facility.
“For decades, Gainesville residents and local leaders have advocated for relocating the Green Street Post Office — a move the USPS supported back in 2018,” said Clyde. “Yet after years of inaction on this matter, the USPS unilaterally decided to reverse course and retain the location. This severely misguided determination completely disregards our community’s position, plans, and thoughtful proposals. I urge the USPS to prioritize Northeast Georgians’ needs over unelected bureaucrats’ demands by returning to its previous decision to relocate the Green Street Post Office.”
Background
Since 1967, the Green Street Post Office has provided both delivery and retail operations for Gainesville residents. However, this location quickly posed traffic and congestion concerns, leading many residents to call for the relocation of the facility. In 1975, the Gainesville City Commission passed a resolution requesting the USPS to consider moving the post office.
For years, Gainesville residents and local leaders floated proposals to relocate the facility. Finally, in 2018, the USPS announced its decision to move the Green Street Post Office. This prompted the relocation of the vast majority of the Green Street Post Office’s services, leaving retail and P.O. Box operations in place. Now, the USPS has reversed its decision, confirming to Rep. Clyde’s office that it intends to retain the Green Street Post Office. |
