Rep. Clyde Denounces Democrats’ Big Government Socialist Spending Bill

I cannot support this fiscally irresponsible and morally bankrupt piece of legislation that moves our nation one giant step toward Big Government Socialism, which is why I resolutely voted ‘NO’ on H.R. 5376.

 – Today, Congressman Andrew Clyde (GA-09) released the following statement after voting against H.R. 5376, the “Build Back Better Act,” which passed the House this morning by a vote of 220-213:

“For months on end, Democrats have recklessly steamrolled ahead - determined to pass the most progressive and expensive piece of legislation in our history. Ripe with radical policies, the Biden Bernie Bankruptcy Act will fundamentally alter the course of our great nation by codifying the Far-Left’s dangerous policies, such as components of the Green New Deal, taxpayer-funded abortion, and the weaponization of the IRS.

“Allergic to logic, Speaker Pelosi rammed this pricey package through at a time when inflation is skyrocketing to its highest point in over three decades. As Americans struggle to afford groceries, gas, and heating bills, Democrats are eagerly exacerbating the ongoing inflation crisis by injecting another $4 trillion into the economy. Further kicking millions of hardworking Americans while they’re down, this imprudent legislation imposes tax hikes on the middle-class - while simultaneously handing hefty tax breaks to the ultra-rich. The Democrats’ severely warped priorities reveal the lengths they will go to enact their liberal wish list.

“American families, workers, and small businesses are desperate for solutions to remedy the multitude of crises facing our nation, yet this sham spending bill does nothing to offer a helping hand. Instead, President Biden’s so-called ‘Build Back Better Act’ only stands to increase bureaucratic red tape, enrich our adversaries, and further cripple Americans’ pocketbooks. I cannot support this fiscally irresponsible and morally bankrupt piece of legislation that moves our nation one giant step toward Big Government Socialism, which is why I resolutely voted ‘NO’ on H.R. 5376.”

Rep. Clyde Lambastes the Democrats' Biden Bernie Bankruptcy Act During House Floor Debate

Background:

Despite President Biden’s repeated claim that his tax and spending bill would cost $0, the Congressional Budget Office confirmed H.R. 5376 will add $367 billion to the deficit over the next decade. Additionally, this legislation seeks to significantly increase the size and scope of the federal government by creating over 150 new government programs.

Some of the most egregious policy provisions tucked within H.R. 5376 would:

  • Provide $80 billion to double the size of the IRS
  • Advance the radical Left’s abortion agenda by omitting the longstanding pro-life Hyde Amendment, which blocks federal dollars from funding abortions
  • $100 billion to establish a backdoor amnesty program that will give 5-year renewable visas to millions of individuals illegally residing in the United States
  • Increase OSHA fines from $70,000 to $700,000 per occurrence on private U.S. businesses that fail to implement the Biden Administration's unconstitutional vaccine mandate
  • Expand the Child Tax Credit to those who enter the U.S. illegally by dropping the current law requirement for a Social Security Number
  • Supply $550 billion for the Green New Deal, including billions for a new climate “green bank,” environmental and climate justice grants, and the United States Postal Service to convert to an electric vehicle fleet
  • Provide $12.5 billion for “tree equity” and radical “environmental justice” initiatives
  • Establish and implement Washington-controlled preschool and childcare programs to the tune of nearly $400 billion
