Rep. Clyde Honors Class of 2026 U.S. Service Academy Nominees

GAINESVILLE, GA— Last week, Congressman Andrew Clyde (GA-09) hosted a reception at Luna’s Restaurant in Gainesville to honor the five young men from the Ninth District who have received an appointment to one of the United States Service Academies: U.S. Air Force Academy, U.S. Naval Academy, U.S. Military Academy at West Point, and the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy. During the event, Congressman Clyde delivered congratulatory remarks and presented each of the nominees with a Certificate of Congressional Recognition.

“These five young men exemplify true leadership, academic excellence, and impeccable character,” said Clyde. “It’s an honor to nominate them, and I enjoyed celebrating their tremendous accomplishments with their family, friends, and mentors. I’m confident they will continue to make the Ninth District proud in their future endeavors, and I wish them the best of luck in attending their prestigious academies and in serving this great country.”

The following candidates received an appointment to one of the U.S. Service Academies:

  • Smith Preston Caudell, of Habersham County (Habersham County High School), to the U.S. Military Academy at West Point

  • John Matthew Layfield Fernandez, of Elbert County (Elbert County Comprehensive High School), to the U.S. Military Academy at West Point

  • Evan Wyatt Prince, of Rabun Gap (Tallulah Falls School), to the U.S. Naval Academy

  • James Evan Thompson IV, of Cumming (Saint Michael the Archangel High School), to the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy 

  • Tomis Nicoles Hamilton, of Cumming (Riverside Military Academy), to the U.S. Air Force Academy

Background: 

Each year, Congressman Clyde nominates eligible candidates for appointment to four of the five U.S. service academies: U.S. Military Academy (USMA), West Point, NY; the U.S. Naval Academy (USNA), Annapolis, MD; the U.S. Air Force Academy (USAFA), Colorado Springs, CO; and the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy (USMMA), Kings Point, NY. The fifth service academy, the U.S. Coast Guard Academy (USCGA), New London, CT, does not require a congressional nomination for appointment.
