Rep. Clyde Reintroduces Legislation to Hold Iran-Backed Houthis Accountable

Washington, D.C. — Today, Congressman Andrew Clyde (GA-09) reintroduced the Standing Against Houthi Aggression Act to reinstate sanctions that President Trump placed on the Iran-backed Houthis and redesignate the group as a foreign terrorist organization.

Last week, the USS Carney, a U.S. Navy guided-missile destroyer in the northern Red Sea, intercepted three missiles and several drones launched by Iran-backed Houthi forces in Yemen. According to the Pentagon, these missiles were potentially heading toward targets in Israel.

“Our world is at a critical inflection point,” said Clyde. “Following Hamas’ horrific terrorist attack on our greatest ally in the Middle East, we have witnessed a dire escalation of violent aggression across the region. Undoubtedly, Iran-backed terrorist groups, including Hamas, Hezbollah, and Houthis, have been emboldened by President Biden’s significant weakness on the world stage. Continuing to capitulate to terrorists like the Houthis will further threaten our national security and dangerously increase the likelihood of pulling the U.S. into another war. To avoid exacerbating tensions, our Commander-in-Chief must respond to these acts of terror with strength by redesignating the Houthis as a foreign terrorist organization and reinstating related sanctions on the group.”

Original cosponsors include: Representatives Mike Gallagher (WI-08), Rich McCormick (GA-06), Andy Ogles (TN-05), Scott Perry (PA-10), Guy Reschenthaler (PA-14), Claudia Tenney (NY-24), and Randy Weber (TX-14).

"The Houthis—who last week fired a barrage of ballistic missiles and drones against Israel and have attacked other US partners such as the UAE and Saudi Arabia—should have never had terrorism sanctions lifted against them by the Biden administration. This critical legislation reimposes terrorism sanctions, and clearly recognizes Ansar Allah as a terrorist organization." - FDD Action
