Rep. Clyde Urges Speaker Johnson to Protect Second Amendment in Second Minibus

WASHINGTON, D.C. — Today, Congressman Andrew Clyde (GA-09) led over 30 of his House Republican colleagues in sending a letter to Speaker Mike Johnson and House Appropriations Chairwoman Kay Granger urging them to protect Americans’ Second Amendment freedoms in the upcoming appropriations package.

Specifically, the lawmakers call on Speaker Johnson and Chairwoman Granger to include the Dickey Amendment to block any further funding for the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) and National Institutes of Health’s (NIH) anti-gun “studies” in the second Fiscal Year 2024 minibus.

“Congress must protect Americans’ Second Amendment liberties from the Biden Administration’s anti-gun attacks via the CDC and NIH,” said Clyde. “Treating firearm-related crime and injuries as a public health issue will undoubtedly end in tyranny. Considering the first half of the omnibus lacked critical policy riders to safeguard the Second Amendment, House Republicans must prioritize the inclusion of the Dickey Amendment to bar additional tax dollars from funding these dangerous anti-gun ‘studies’ in the forthcoming government funding package.”

“Recently, the Biden Administration censored self-defense statistics from the CDC’s website and GOA was forced to sue the Governor of New Mexico because she banned lawful self-defense in Albuquerque using a ‘public health emergency.’ Gun owners know exactly where treating crime as a public health epidemic leads: to gun control. We must ensure no federal funds go towards more biased, anti-gun ‘research’ to encourage unconstitutional gun control policies and that’s why we’re urging Speaker Johnson to strengthen the Dicky Amendment in the upcoming appropriations package.” – Aidan Johnston, Director of Federal Affairs, Gun Owners of America.

Background

In 1996, Congress passed an amendment, commonly known as the Dickey Amendment, to the annual appropriations bill that prohibited the use of federal funds to “advocate or promote gun control.”
